Third Grade

March 11, 2012

As promised here are the third grade weavings in process of being displayed . . .

Third graders also recently finished architecture collages using construction paper, crayons, and texture plates! Students learned how to add texture to their buildings to give them a realistic feel. We looked at buildings by Antoni Gaudi and Frank Lloyd Wright. Students also shared the texture seen in Albrecht Durer's drawings of animals and Monet's lilypads.

Coming soon . .. drawings inspired by The Scream by Edvard Munch!

Good and bad news third grade . . . Before break our third graders created beautiful paintings of cardinals in the snow! They turned out amazing! Bad news is I didn't take any pictures! So you will just have to believe me when I tell you the paintings are stunning.

Our third graders are currently learning about weaving and abstract art. A strange combination you may say, but you will see what I mean very soon!

Finally pictures! Hooray! (First few are from the Arcimboldo lesson, then the rest are Found Object Sculptures!)

December 3, 2011

Yeah it's Found Object Sculpture time! Just what third graders were meant for! Finding a bunch of stuff and gluing it together! In an artful way of course.

Our third grade artists recently discovered found object or assemblage art. We observed works by Louise Nevelson and Dewey Blocksma. We identified and described the objects they used, and learned a bit of each artist's history.

This past week third graders created their own found object sculptures by starting with a strong base, and using glue and tape to add random objects (pom-poms, paper clips, foam balls, popsicle sticks, buttons, etc. etc. etc.). We talked about how this project REALLY makes you think OUTSIDE THE BOX. Creativity at its finest! I don't have anything to show off yet, except my work space where the sculptures are waiting to be taken back to their makers and finished! Come back soon to see the finished works!

The weeks before we started making found object sculptures, we learned about the Renaissance artist Arcimboldo, who created portraits of people with fruits, vegetables, plants, etc. Can you guess the similarity between Arcimboldo's artwork and Dewey Blocksma's?

Our students created wonderful portraits inspired by Arcimboldo, that I will be sharing very soon! I promise!

Third graders just finished pointillism landscape paintings inspired by artist Georges Seurat. We talked about the dots in his painting Sunday Afternoon at the Island of Grande Jatte, along with warm and cool colors. Especially where we see warm colors in the fall. Check out the awesome paintings below by our wonderful artists!

Our wonderful third graders just finished making art using string, poster board squares, and paper strips! We used line to show movement, similar to contemporary artist Julie Mehretu. Please enjoy the artworks below! (Next you will see our pointillism paintings, inspired by Georges Seurat!)
