Why do people wear jewelry?

"Because they want to look fancy!"
"Because they want to show they are happy!"

Here are some of the Kindergarten necklaces! We were inspired by African beaded jewelry (specifically Zulu jewelry).  Students were able to identify and describe what colors people may wear if they are happy or sad. We learned that different patterns mean you are from different places in Africa! We also learned what medallions are and how to create textures in air-dry clay!

The past month Kindergarten has been learning about ocean life! We read Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle and created seahorse collages inspired by his wonderfully colorful illustrations. Students used many different types of lines to create the ocean behind their colorful seahorses.

A couple of our Kindergarten classes were ahead of the others (because of institute days) so they also created fish collages using corrugated cardboard and wire. Student stamped bubble-like designs around their fish with modeling clay and ink pads. Please take a moment to enjoy the fun textures and designs our artists came up with!

Next our artists will be learning about jewelry and color pattern! Did you know that in some parts of Africa beads were used as money? And sometimes made out of eggshells? Wow!

I am proud to show off a couple of the artworks Kindergarten made before winter break! Students learned about the artist Paul Klee, and reviewed the primary colors. We also introduced the secondary colors by reading Mouse Paint and mixing primary color crayons together!

The past week couple weeks students have been learning about texture, or how something feels! This past week students created mitten drawings inspired by The Mitten by Jan Brett. We were able to watch a short video of Jan Brett painting a picture of a hedgehog to get inspired! Unfortunately I do not have any pictures of The Mitten artworks yet, but soon they will be on artsonia!

This upcoming week we will be creating royal portraits!

Winter has arrived in the artroom! In efforts to get some wintery artworks on display our Kindergartners created these snowmen before the snow!

We read Snowmen at Night (which we LOVED!) by Caralyn Buehner, and created our own glittery snowmen! Because, lets be serious, glitter is just the BEST (especially when it is pre-mixed into a clear medium so it doesn't get everywhere)!!

Students traced, cut and glued 3 circles from a piece of folded white paper. They traced one big, medium, and small circle by using multi-circle stencils. ALL ON THEIR OWN! (I don't know about you, but I love seeing how unique each artwork turns out when students do more on their own.) Students then decorated their snowmen with crayons and of course glitter. Most of these collages can be seen at http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=40974, but here is just a taste.

Before the winter arrived in art, we created warm and cool color turkeys! Our little artists have been learning about the warm colors and cool colors. Can you tell? We put warm color tissue paper in the feathers and cool colors with markers in the background.

Kindergarten is learning about printmaking and abstract art!

Printmaking is like stamping! Students used sponges and paint to create these awesome prints! Check out our artsonia page to see more.

Abstract art is like doodling! We read Beautiful Oops and then created these abstract drawings by starting with a "spaghetti line" and adding color, pattern, and foam shapes.

And so wonderful artworks continue to be made in Kindergarten art class! We are learning about the primary colors and symmetry. I'm so impressed with how quickly our little artist learn new words!

In the past three weeks we have made drawings of turtles inspired by the artist Mondrian, symmetrical masks, and symmetrical bats.  Students learned how to fold paper in half and cut on the fold side in order to create a symmetrical shape. Please enjoy some artworks below along with our artsonia website. I'm so proud!

Remember to turn in your artsonia permission slips (in take home folder) in order to see your child's artwork! I will have extras at open house on October 13th.

Also remember you can order your child's artwork printed on different objects (mugs, t-shirts, keychains, etc.). Part of the money you spend will go to our art supply budget!

Here's some samples of what you will see at artsonia.com

Happy Fall Kinder Artists!

We are continuing to learn about line in art! All classes identified lines in a bird eye view photo of a neighborhood. We also talked about "collage". Check out the images below to see some fab examples!

Our Artsonia page will be up and running very soon! Everyone who turned in a permission form will be able to see their artwork on that site. So stay tuned for info about that as well.

Next we are going to create fall tree collages! (My goal is for that to be the first work on Artsonia.)

Lines, lines, lines!

Right now Kindergarten is learning about line! We are creating line collages inspired by Native American blankets. Pictures to come!
