Fifth Grade

March 11, 2012

Fifth grade just finished Op Art drawings using colored pencil, crayon, and paper. Simple materials maybe, but the results are just stunning! Students were able to hide shapes in their paper by carefully switching colors, much like a checker board. Some students even hid their name!

Now fifth graders are learning about balance and movement in art by studying Gustav Klimt's Tree of Life, along with a few other famous artworksWe warmed up this past week by creating collages from pre-cut shapes in order to show these two structures. Soon we will start our Tree of Me paintings!

Here are the collages . . . .

Our fifth grade still life paintings are finished! And aren't they SWEET?! I've gotten so many compliments on these paintings in the halls - but really it is the work of our great 5th grade artists! Well done!

The next lesson we did just before break (and next year I will plan the timing better!) was printmaking! Students created prints of advertisements by using foam plates, pencils, ink, brayers, and paper! Students first drew their advertisement on white paper, then redrew it on a foam plate while pushing in the lines. They then inked up their plate with a rolling tool called a brayer (much like you would ink up a stamp) and pressed it onto paper. They repeated this process 3 times. Voila! Printmaking! Students who finished were able to make a little booklet of their prints to take home.

Currently our 5th grade artists are creating African masks for the fifth grade music performance on Feb. 9th! I can't wait to see how they turn out!

It's still life time in our fifth grade classes! We have been studying "delicious" artworks by Wayne Thiebaud. (If you want to know why I say delicious, google Wayne Thiebaud and click Images.) Students started the lesson by warming up in their sketchbooks. We did contour line drawings of animals and learned how to show value in objects or forms. Students then penciled in their still life on paper and this past week added paint! The paintings are turning out great and I can't wait to show them off here!

Earlier in November we created Day of the Dead skulls using model magic clay. Students reviewed what they know about the holiday, and perhaps learned more, and then created these skulls. Don't they look awesome?!

Fifth graders just finished these fantastic value scales using warm and cool colors and line designs. Students amazed me with their knowledge of light and dark!

Welcome back cool cats! In fifth grade we just finished up posters inspired by 80's artist Keith Haring! Haring's art often includes bright colors, figures, and movement lines. He also created "graffiti" art on black boards in the NYC subway stations. Check out our awesome artworks!

We currently are creating value scales with colored pencil, which I'm excited to show off very soon!

Happy Fall Fifth Grade Artists!

Fifth graders are finishing up their identity flags and they look great! Click the photos below to enlarge (more coming soon).

Next we are learning about artist Keith Haring. Students are starting this lesson by drawing lines inspired by the "beats" in instrumental music. Students will be creating posters that are inspired by Haring's figures, symbols, and lines. In this lesson we will continue to learn about identity and emotion in art.

Check out Keith Haring's awesome kid-friendly webpage below!

Hey hip hipsters!

Right now fifth graders are making flags that represent their identity. They are using symbols, along with stripes and colors to create a meaningful design. To learn about identity in art we reviewed the work of Kerry James Marshall and Frida Kahlo.

Soon I will have images of the wonderful artwork by our fifth graders! In the meantime, click the link below to see the artwork we studied by Kerry James Marshall. How do you think he shows his identity in his art?
